Celebrity Stories: Shining a Spotlight on Mental Health Awareness

By: Michelle Hintz, PsyD, Licensed Psychologist

Mental health challenges affect millions of people regardless of their background or status. Despite the prevalence of these issues, there’s a growing awareness and acceptance surrounding mental health struggles, thanks in part to the courage of well-known and famous people who have shared their own journeys. Here, we explore three stories from celebrities who have been open about their struggles with mental health: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Lady Gaga, and Prince Harry. Their openness not only reduces stigma but also highlights the importance of seeking help.

  • Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: The renowned actor and former professional wrestler, Dwayne Johnson, has been open about his struggles with depression. Despite achieving immense success in his career, Johnson faced dark periods in his life where he grappled with his mental health. He once shared, “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly.” However, Johnson emphasizes the importance of seeking help and maintaining a positive outlook. He advocates for mental health awareness and encourages others to prioritize their well-being.
  • Lady Gaga: Internationally acclaimed singer and actress, Lady Gaga, has been vocal about her experiences with mental health challenges, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). Gaga has used her platform to destigmatize mental illness and promote self-care and acceptance. She once stated, “I openly admit to having battled depression and anxiety and I think a lot of people do.” Gaga’s advocacy extends to her Born This Way Foundation, which focuses on empowering youth and promoting kindness and mental wellness.
  • Prince Harry: As a member of the British royal family, Prince Harry has used his platform to raise awareness about mental health issues. He has been candid about his own struggles with grief following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, when he was just 12 years old. Prince Harry co-founded the charity Heads Together, which aims to challenge mental health stigma and provide support to those in need. Reflecting on his journey, Prince Harry shared, “I know there is huge merit in talking about your issues and the only thing about keeping it quiet is that it’s only ever going to make it worse.” His openness has encouraged others to seek help and prioritize their mental well-being.

These stories are just a small sample of those forging a path towards destigmatizing mental health issues. Now more than ever, resources for mental health support and treatment are more accessible – from therapy and counseling to medication and support groups, there are numerous avenues for finding competent and compassionate help. A quick online search can put you in touch with several websites to find a mental health provider who meets your specific needs and preferences, whether you’re looking for in-person therapy or online counseling.
